Alternatively, explore by Dolmus. This is an inexpensive minibus service that ferries people between villages & operates on a ‘stop me when you see me’ system ’ i.e. there probably is a timetable but……. It may take a little longer but along the way you will certainly see life. Here are some of the surrounding villages & places of interest you may want to visit during your stay in Kalkan. Kaputas Beach:- is a few mins drive from Kalkan & is one of the most beautiful sandy beaches ever, very well photographed & is popular for fashion shoots. Kas :- a small town with pretty harbour, narrow streets in the old town with carpet & kilim shops, jewellery, art & local craft shops, etc. Market day is Friday. Fethiye :- the nearest large town approx. 1 hour away, market day Tuesday. The town services a large agricultural community, you will be amazed by the acres of green houses on this very fertile plain. It also has a large natural harbour with boats & yachts of all sizes, even small cruise liners occasionally. Ancient rock tombs cut into the cliffs behind the town, nearby a castle, a small amphitheatre & sarcophagi can be found nearer to the harbour. Patara :- a small village, but pass thru’ & make your way down to the beach, & acres of sand dunes that stretch for miles. You will have to pay a small fee to enter this area that was once a most important harbour & city in Lycian times. Very little restoration has been done here & only a small part of the ruins of the city can be seen emerging from the sand dunes. Tlos, Xanthos, & Letoon :- are all small villages with significant ancient sites set in this varied landscape of fertile valleys, pine forests & rugged mountains but never far from the beautiful coastline. Olu Deniz :- with its famous beach & `dead sea’ , easily recognisable from many posters advertising this region. The nearby Kaya Koy or Ghost Village is the result of the population exchange between Greeks & Turks in 1923. Saklikent gorge :- an excellent place to visit in the heat of the summer day. Walk thru’ the gorge in the cool mountain water or just relax & enjoy a meal sitting on a platform over the rushing ice-cold water. There are many trout farms in this mountain area where a simple & inexpensive meal can be enjoyed in a beautiful setting. Kekova :- is the name of the area & also the Island where submerged ruins & magical island scenery along a beautiful coast line come together. With a fortress castle & a small village it feels like stepping back in time. A boat trip is a must, to pass quietly over the ruins & look down thru’ clear waters onto the site of an ancient civilisation. A charter boat can also be hired from Kalkan to include a magical overnight stay anchored in the tranquil bays of these beautiful islands & serene waters.
